Liverpool vs Chelsea, Uefa Super Cup 2019: live score and latest updates

Liverpool vs Chelsea Live

Good evening liveblog fans, it is that time of the season when two continental titans face-off to get their hands on the Super Cup, the highly prestigious trophy they all want to win. Well, that’s how UEFA would like this clash to be thought of, for most fans, however, the match is viewed as somewhat of a glorified friendly. But a trophy is a trophy and both sides for different reasons will be keen to win in Istanbul.

The big question many want answered is will Jurgen Klopp give Liverpool’s pre-match team talk dressed only in a shirt tucked into a pair of Cristiano Ronaldo-branded pants? Apparently the German showed off his sartorial daring streak by doing just that before his side’s Champions League final against Real Madrid last year. Considering they lost that match 3-1 we reckon he might err on the side of caution and stick to delivering his rousing rallying call wearing his preferred tracksuit number.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard might also decide to display his cautious side this evening. The Blues were torn apart on the counter-attack as they stumbled to a 4-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday. Liverpool, who finished 25 points ahead of the West London club last season, are a side that not only relish exploiting gaps and vulnerable defenses but are, on their day, one of the best at it.

The worry for Lampard’s side is that they conceded similar goals throughout pre-season with too many players attacking to have anything approaching protection for the defence. If Chelsea adopt the same approach as Sunday and pre-season, Liverpool will simply lick their lips, burst into the space and likely create havoc.

Lampard claims his side have learned their lesson and told them to “give them everything” at Vodafone Park.

“It’s going to be tough, but we cannot walk off the pitch and think, ‘Oh, we could’ve done that’ or ‘We missed that opportunity’ or ‘We weren’t quite ready’ or make any excuses for ourselves,” Lampard told uefa.com.

“We need to be absolutely ready. It’s a cup that the club desperately wants to win. I’ve never won it, a lot of players in there have never won it, so we have to give it everything.

“Going up against the team with the quality of Liverpool in a final is as tense as finals can be.”
